Woot!

That was extremely nice to listen to. Probably due to your minimal equipment (Jesus man, just Audacity, big kudos) it really has a cool 8-bit feel to it.
I lolled at the jump and power-up sounds, the only thing I feel didn't belong was the YIPPEEE.
A nine, an encouraging 5, and heck, a download too. Check out my tunes!

Trunks responds:

Yay, thanks a lot! I tried to make the Yippee blend in, but it wouldn't work, but I had to show that it was Mario making those noises :D

And thanks, it was frigging hard to make...

Will do!

Liar!

Come on dude, this is DEFINITELY trance, now you've tricked me into reviewing it!

I'll tell you why I don't like trance. First, it seems to always has to have bone-cutting trebly synths playing sentimental melodies, and second it has that hideous low clap so all 4 beats are accentuated, leaving no room for a groove whatsoever.

What you've done with it is classy, crafty, probably even inventive - I recognize a lot of FX but can't really predict them, which is often the case so that is a plus.

Another plus is that you had an at least SOMEWHAT syncopated (my word of the day) half-time beat, where other people would just drop the beat, maybe leave a little hi-hat on,

The part with the tribal-sounding drums was a good find too.

And yes, it's energetic, but still relies too much on its speed for my tastes. Honestly, reconsider the genre, it makes you lazy!

Lol! I crack myself up sometimes.

Sorry bout the Slayer thing in the other review btw, I stand corrected. What I meant with having melodies hostile to each other is indeed well-described as "dueling leads", having them battle for the "main"-prefix so we can enjoy them beating the crap out of each other. Panning/volume swipes can help with that, for example.

k? k. :D

cornandbeans responds:

hahaha

well, I usually don't listen to too much trance, I try to find something a little more melody based. I can see why you don't like trance, so it gives me another view on the genre. At least some things came as a surprise to you, I'm glad. I tried to make it as diverse as I could, with the drums and all.

Ahh... and no reason to be sorry :P I added the blood overdrive thing to it, so that affected the sound a bit. Thanks for the review, I'm glad you checked it out.

Sick.

You make me sick! Lol. I crack myself up sometimes.

("I crack myself up sometimes" is a phrase I have suddenly taken a rather disturbing liking to, and I will strive to use it in as many reviews as possible, the challenge being that I have to come up with something very funny, which doesn't apply to this particular review by the way. There is no reason whatsoever to read this paragraph and that is why it is between brackets)

Great, great beat, if a little undermixed - it tends to get eaten by the synths later on.

So this is the infamous Slayer VST? Hm. It doesn't sound like a guitar, but it sounds too much like a guitar to think it's just a distorted synth. Therefore, I don't like it. Not your fault of course :)

It really builds up well after that though. Lots of different parts to be enjoyed, seamlessly connected and mainting the energy. ZING! cornandbeans level up! You get +3 to your Variety, and gain 10 expression points!

I'd be a little careful with several synths playing the exact same melody (give or take an octave or two), because that can lead to what we happy Dutch people call "painting red roses red", i.e. delivering the exact same message multiple times. Try to make different parts that complement each other, or better yet, are a bit hostile toward each other, it'll make is edgier, which - combined with the edginess you already have at your disposal - will make you AWESOME.

And with that I shall leave you. I'll check Event Horizon, but I must warn you that I generally hate trance, so if it doesn't appeal to me I will have nothing useful to say.

cornandbeans responds:

lol... that's actually not Slayer VST. That's a little ditty I made on sytrus. XD
Anyhow, I can see how you might of mistaken it for something else. The beat.. gah.. I'm listening to it now on speakers and it does sound a bit eaten up by the synths. I'm not sure what you mean by making them hostile toward each other.. dueling leads or something a little more along the lines of shifting the pitches? Hmm. Well, thanks for the very helpful review again, you always give me some great tips to improve.

~cornandbeans

...btw, Event Horizon really isn't trance at all even though I labeled it that :P

God damn it

The shit they put on Front Page nowadays, first that godawful "The adventures of M'bnoemnoem" and now this. tank,

Whoops.

I just dodged a telepathic ray from Watercolour, trying to turn this review into a forgey!

Okay let's try some reverse psychology. If you had actually handled this like a song that you disliked, it would probably have turned out better. When I saw you say in one of your responses that you couldn't get the mastering right, I thought: yes, that is exactly the problem. You should have purposely mastered it wrong and it probably would've become a totally trippy experience. More of that vocoder would've been welcome too.

It still breathes originality, whether you agree with that or not - it just lacks creative soul. I know as well as you that you can do better but don't just discard this. It definitely has its moments.

Rucklo responds:

hmmm thats a great idea, ill master something really fuckd up on a projce.. mweheheheheehh you´re an evil mastermind you are :D

mwehehehe.
he. >:)

Gay!

Slightly less gay than the other one. I voted 0 in my head, but 5 for real.

Get better parents.

cat-bastards responds:

ur gay twice as much and your parents are nice! >:(

Gay!

I hate songs about fairies, and this was a song about fairies!
And you stole it from Iggy Popzorz!
You suck at guitar btw, and your drums are abysmal.

Five, keep it up.

cat-bastards responds:

ur gay! >:(

YESSS

(read review for Imperion first)

You're back in my heart :)
Totally loved this. It's got all the padman-elements. Mean beat, glitches, weird noises, driving bass, syncopated synths, everything.

I'm not giving up on you, lol!

Fifen.

dj-padman1 responds:

Aaah, praise from Caesar..
Glad I'm back in your good books, man, its a volatile world being a padman. :P

Yeah, I suppose deep down, this is my favourite type of electronic music alongside electronica and hard techno. I had some fun making this, and I'm stoked it gave you some satisfaction. :)

I must stop by your page soon, I remember you had some newies.

Well...

I would not have reviewed this if it wasn't you, I simply dislike this sort of music, but I'll give you that it's very well done - it's as diverse as trance can get, and it maintains its energy throughout the track.
Lots of pathos in the harmonies, which again I dislike, but certainly adds to the continuity.
I don't have much else to say - I wish you wouldn't waste your glitch and FX talents on a genre like this but it's entirely your call of course. Good luck on the competition! Now let's see if I like your new D'nB submission more :)

dj-padman1 responds:

Wintang, first off, thanks for taking the time to review this beast, especially since I now know you're not a fan of trance. I'll file that away in the old memory banks!
-Consults family member to learn what 'pathos' means-
Ahh, I see! Well, you're right, thats the name of the game I think. Maybe a hard trance submission would be more to your liking? I admit that this type of trance doesn't have a wide appeal. A bit flowery, but somehow satisfying on some levels.
I should get my act together and actually finalise some of my hard techno and trance.
Well, you're a good man for biting the bullet and sitting throught the whole damn thing :) I thank you.

P.S It's a garageband comp, so I'll probably get the results in about 3 years!

Hi! We're the Wheatfield Frolics!

It's again very nicely done, sounds good again. It really belongs in the same suite as Dryad Whispers (you invent great titles btw) in its soothingness.
I'd suggest you experiment more with countermelodies, and syncopating the rhythm section.
I hadn't listened to your music yet, but you're a great find! Keep it up!

Grumbleduke responds:

I does sound like a band, doesn't it?

Thanks again for your positive words, and keep watching this space; something else may happen!

Soothing.

Nice piece of music, this! Beautiful sounds and a nice comforting composition. It was a little too poppy for my taste though, partly because of the continuous arpeggio of the harp. I was rather hoping for a 2nd voice on the lead melody as well.
But otherwise, very nice. Check out some of my stuff!

Grumbleduke responds:

Well, it had the desired effect, so I'm happy. I happen to like my homophony, thank you very much :P. Besides, we all know arpeggios make a suitable stand-in for real counterpoint any day (cough). Thank for the review and I shall go check your stuff now.
